Art Psychotherapy

IMG_8151.jpeg

Art Psychotherapy combines the usual practices of talking therapy - a safe confidential space to discuss what may be troubling you - with the possibility of using creativity to acquire further insight. By working with images it is possible to explore emotional issues in a different way.

In therapy, art can offer the opportunity to see, feel and sit with experiences and feelings that can be difficult to put into words. The creation of images could represent a way to understand yourself and your relationship with others in more depth. During sessions sometimes people like to draw, use collage, clay, paint, writing, poetry, photography or music. However, sometimes it is enough to describe images or metaphors to convey an idea or a feeling.

You do not need to be an artist or have had any art experience to benefit from this.

I will not be interpreting your creative process but I will instead encourage you to be curious and reflective on what you have made. Together we can then continue to explore what might best support your wellbeing and mental health.

Art therapy can be an immensely powerful experience: by being an outlet for feelings and an aid to self-understanding.  Engaging with creativity can help improve self-esteem, help to express experiences that are difficult to verbalise and can enable one to engage with forgotten memories.

Psychotherapy can be a life-changing experience. People start therapy for many different reasons. You may feel dissatisfied or distressed, want to explore the past, process difficult life events, or achieve new goals. You will find a non-judgmental and safe space where you can focus on yourself.
